Andy and Karl crack open eighteen years of shared studio space and start digging through the wreckage of their influences — Jack Davis, EC horror, Bernie Wrightson, that Lost Boys comic with the sax-playing vampire hunter (yes, really).
From there it’s straight into the deep end:
Rediscovering Kirby after finding a $100 copy of Days of Future Past in a Montreal shop with a million back-issues sitting unsorted in boxes
Losing their minds over Kirby Crackle and arguing whether Thor is Marvel’s Superman
Geeking out on smoke-damaged Silver Age paper and why “bad condition” is actually the good condition
Admitting they’d rather blow through their own comic collection three pages at a time than stop and go draw something inspired by it
Karl breaking down how he builds pages like a house — beam by beam, no thumbnails, straight from the beats in his head
Andy explaining why Mother Trucker is secretly an Italian statue wearing a He-Man body
Somewhere in there they land on the real thesis: making your own comic, writing and drawing it yourself, is the only version of this job that actually has heart.
